St Valentine's Day 2018

Love changes everything. Live loved.

On Valentine’s Day 2015, I was in Tallaght, preparing to make my First Profession as a Dominican Sister the following day. 

On Valentine’s Day 2018, I am in Dún Laoghaire, preparing to renew my vows as a Dominican Sister during Evening Prayer tomorrow.

This weekend, a group of our sisters shared something of our vocation stories with one another. Reflecting on my vocation in the days since, I realise that I might have said something far simpler.
Just this:

I fell in love with God. I fell in love with Jesus. 
It’s that simple and that complex. 
The rest is just detail. 

As Pedro Arrupé SJ said: “Fall in love. Stay in love, and it will decide everything.”
"Now is the favourable time" (2 Cor. 6:2)
"My heart is ready O God, my heart is ready" (Psalm 108)

One Day Now more than ever, our world needs prayer, needs healing, needs beauty, needs reminders of its saving. Now more than ever, we need prayer, need healing, need beauty, need reminders of our saving, to save us from ourselves Open your mind and you will find those reminders. You are God's farm!

Four words towards the end of today’s reading at Mass really stood out: 'you are God's farm' (1 Corinthians 3:9). While the surrounding phrases are so familiar I could almost recite them verbatim, until today I have never noticed these four words. Of all days, they were particularly meaningful today. On the third anniversary of his death, my uncle Timmie was very much in my heart. At morning prayer, I prayed in thanksgiving for his beautiful personality. So why did these words of St Paul’s strike me? Because my uncle Timmie was a farmer, because I grew up next door to his farm, because I spent hours in his company, in his home, on his land. St Paul reproaches the Corinthians for being ‘still unspiritual’, for missing the point: we are ‘co-workers with God’ but only God matters. It is God who makes things grow.
