Of course, that this is not true in the absolute and literal sense is something of which Dostoevsky was fully aware. It is God who saves the world - only God: 'for God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life' (John 3:16). In these days, our world is filled with much that is intensely ugly - violence, corruption, division, racism, anger, poverty, gaping inequality, hunger, war, displacement of peoples, exploitation, diminished respect for life, out-of-control consumerism, climate change and destruction, an ongoing pandemic.
